Hi all!
Today we received another notice in our mail from the UCP folks saying “We need your usable clothes” etc. We get one of these notices about once a month. I assume you do too, so I just wanted to share my experience from this past month and share my concerns.
In June, I decided to try making a donation. I spent several days going through used clothing I no longer wanted and laundering it. Since the notice states “Place your boxes or bags curbside & clearly visible from the street by 8:00 AM on pickup day,” I spent over an hour the night before pick up hauling 7 boxes of clothing and a 2 boxes of small household items to our curb. In the morning, when I saw the boxes still sitting there, I went to inspect them. They had been gone through and cherry-picked! My first concern: By setting out these charitable boxes we seem to be attracting undesirable thieves into our neighborhood. When the boxes hadn’t been picked up by early afternoon, I shot an email to the UCP website. No response. By 4pm, the boxes were still sitting at our curb, so I tried calling the UCP folks and left a message. By 5:15pm, I finally hauled the boxes back into my garage. The following day I finally got an email from the UCP office. There was no standard apology for my inconvenience. They just seemed to think it was my fault for not leaving the boxes out long enough “because the driver picked things up late that day!”
I wanted to share this experience 1) because of my concern about any of us encouraging undesirables into our neighborhood in hopes of finding “goodies” in donation boxes, and 2) because I found the customer service and attitude of UCP completely unacceptable. I will take my charitable donations to the Goodwill or Salvation Army in the future.
