Herb Simon

Info about one of our founders and leaders.

Our neighborhood group is sorry to hear about the passing of Herb Simon back in February. He was 88 and had lived on Garcia Avenue since 1955. He was a teacher and school administrator in the San Francisco public schools (1946-1979). He was a very kind, loving, fun, creative, artistic and caring man, who loved his life, family, friends and neighbors.

Herb was married to Etienne in 1951. They later had two children Etienne Melcher and Ralph Simon. He also had two wonderful grandchildren, a great son-in-law and daughter-in-law.

Before Herb got ill he would walk regularly up Edgehill, the Forest Hill stairs, Twin Peaks and other nearby places. He got to know many of the neighbors through his walks.

Herb enjoyed giving his time in the neighborhood with our annual block parties, working on beautification projects, and drawing clever illustrations on our invitations. He helped maintain the Pacheco stairway stretch with his son Ralph with sweeping, weed pulling and general maintenance.

Life will be a little different in the neighborhood without Herb. A big thank you to Etienne, Ralph and Laura for all the efforts put into arranging our annual block parties since 1992. We do not want to forget what our other wonderful neighbors have done with their special talents.

With the times dramatically changing and lack of interest in our neighborhood group we have decided to skip our Fall Block Party in October. Many of our neighbors seem to be busy with everyday life and other personal interests. Let’s not abandon all the things we have done within our neighborhood group.
